Certified SCAMPI Lead Appraiser Certifications

Organizations around the world work diligently to achieve performance excellence based on CMMI’s benchmark practices. When they are ready to measure their accomplishments against the CMMI, they call a Lead Appraiser to determine their capability or maturity level.

Certification Process for Beginners

The CMMI Institute will contact the applicant to confirm their acceptance as a Candidate Appraiser. Upon acceptance, a Candidate Appraiser can register for the SCAMPI Lead Appraiser Training course.

  1. Complete prerequisite CMMI training courses

  2. Confirmation of CMMI Partner Sponsorship

    Be sure your sponsoring organization is a CMMI Institute Partner that is licensed for the CMMI product suite.

  3. Submit the CMMI Lead Appraiser Application Package

    You must submit:

    • A completed Partner Candidate Sponsorship Form
    • For non-native English speakers send in your TOEFL score demonstrating you can read, write, and speak understandable English.

  4. Review Appraiser Application

    Each application will be reviewed by the CMMI Institute Appraiser Application Review committee.

    Candidates will be reviewed on the following selection criteria:

    • Teaching Experience and Skills

      Candidates must have training and/or experience in classroom presentations and management skills.

      Examples of these skills includes:

      • Presenting procedural and conceptual information in a clear and concise manner.
      • Facilitating group discussion and interaction using instructional media presentation.
    • Discipline Area Experience and Skills

      The candidate must have at least 10 years of experience in their desired domain.

      Development:

      • The candidate must have at least 10 years of project management and engineering experience in systems or software. At least two of these years must include management of technical personnel.

      Services:

      • The candidate must have at least 10 years of experience as an employee and/or manager/supervisor in a services environment (3 years of the 10 years of services experience must be in a non-CMMI environment; 2 of the years of the 10 must be managing a service). Experience may be on the job and can include volunteer or community service.

      Acquisition:

      • The candidate must have at least 10 years of project management. At least two of these years must include managing technical or acquisition personnel, and five years of experience in acquisition.

      PeopleCMM:

      • The candidate must have at least 10 years of management experience. At least two of these years must include management of personnel.
    • Academic Credentials

      Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent experience.

    • Appraisal Experience and Skills

      Participation as an appraisal team member on:

      • At least two SCAMPI A appraisals,
      • or one SCAMPI A and two SCAMPI B or C appraisals
      • These appraisals must be completed within 24 months prior to the desired training course
    • Language Experience and Skills

      Fluency in English is required to become a CMMI Certified Lead Appraiser.

  5. Submit Written Exercise

    You must successfully complete a scenario-based written exercise before advancing to the next step.

    Your completed written exercise should be sent to the CMMI Institute for evaluation. Candidates whose exercise evaluation is not satisfactory will receive directions for their next steps.

  6. Complete Appraiser Training

    All Candidates must complete the five-day SCAMPI Lead Appraiser Training course.

  7. Pass CMMI Qualification Exam

    After successfully completing the training course, you can register for the qualification exam.

    To register for the exam a candidate must:

    • Contact the CMMI Institute to schedule your qualification exam.
    • The SCAMPI Lead Appraiser exam consists of 60 multiple choice questions that deal with appraisal planning and implementation. You must answer at least 80% of these questions correctly. You will be allotted 2 hours to complete the closed-book exam. You may take the exam a maximum of three times, each retake will cost a fee of $250.
  8. Schedule and complete an Observation

    Within 24 months of successfully completing the SCAMPI Lead Appraiser Training, you must demonstrate the ability to successfully lead a SCAMPI A appraisal.
